argh-poison ivy update

Sun Jul 27, 2008, 7:51 AM

  • Reading: Spellbound! :3
  • Watching: Yuuugioh.

It's "better," by which I mean it's on the road to going away.

I dunno if I mentioned before, but it's on my right forearm, and I'm right-handed, so it's been annoyingly difficult to draw or write or anything (I'm currently typing with my left hand, which makes my shoulder ache, oddly.)

Right now, the center of the rash has dissipated, and the skin has peeled away to reveal new skin underneath. Unfortunately, the entire area around the rash has become swollen and red (possibly due to a bandaging mishap the other day but I can't be sure) and I can't move my arm quite right because it stretches and hurts when I do so. Also, the new skin isn't really in stellar shape itself; it's stretched, thin and over sensitive. :P In some places, it's opened up and bled slightly.

Cool still helps but I have concerns the full out ice may be slowing the healing process. Also, noxema no longer is a viable option because of the open places, which burn if I put anything on them. :XD: So I'm kinda stuck putting up with it until the swelling goes down.

At work, I have been bandaging it up and putting a cut up tube sock over the bandage. I have gotten the weirdest commentary.

o.o

Awww. D: That sucks. At least it's some progress to getting better.

New skin? Does it usually do that with poison ivy?

Not unless it blisters, which is what mine did (and I suspect it blistered because I was unconsciously scratching at it. :P )

Dx Ow. I really hope it clears up soon, that's awful.

While you're at it, why not make it a full-on arm warmer? And you can decorate it! :D

I found when had a plantar wart removed in my foot that after a while putting Neosporin on it every day was just slowing down the healing process. It has to be fairly dry if you want it to heal quickly. I hope it goes away soon!

Hmm... In a first-aid class I once had, the teacher said that cold things stop pain and warm things help the healing process (and can increase pain...). (I think I had that class after I had my wisdom teeth removed, but I probably still wouldn't have followed the instructions they gave me. I was supposed to use cold for a time and then warm, I think, but I just kept using cold, instead, and didn't take the pain medicine. ^_^" ) Although... I guess the hot and cold things I mentioned aren't always true for every situation... My dad had a hot bath after I got him stung by a yellow jacket and he said the place had felt better then, and worse when he tried putting something cold on it.
Have you asked a doctor about anything? If I had something like that, I'd probably wonder if I had the plague or something and end up in the emergency room. (especially if scratching makes it much worse... When I have something ichy, I scratch it, so if it's wrong to scratch something, I'd probably be too used to doing it not affecting it any...)

XD I actually plan on buying the first bag of black tube socks I find (the one I'm using is grey :P) and making arm warmers out of them.

Yeah, that sounds like what's going on with this (except it still helps to use the noxema when I'm cleaning it).

I'm fairly sure it will-- I just wish it didn't itch more before it actually healed up. :p

When I got my wisdom teeth out I just left it alone and slept all day for a few days (and took the meds at night.... O_o)

Oh, trust me, if you ever get poison ivy, scratching it is the absolute worst thing you can do no matter how it itches. :p

Haven't needed to ask a doctor. My mother used to get it all the time, I had her sage advice.
